So you have made the decision to keep your placenta, but now what? Here are a few tips to keep it safe & simple!
1. Share your wishes with the person that will be helping you through your labor & delivery. Your support person (Father of the baby, your Mom, your sister or your Doula) can help keep an eye on your sacred placenta so it doesn't vanish from your delivery room.
2. Be sure to share your wishes with your OB or Midwife and the RN that will be at your delivery. You can tell them when you are admitted or add it to your birth plan, either way, don't forget to speak up!
3. Bring a cooler with you to the hospital or birthing center. Nothing huge, just big enough to store a six pack of beverages. Most hospitals will put your placenta in a plastic container labeled with your name.
4. Fill the cooler with ice right after delivery to ensure freshness and have it taken to your refrigerator as soon as possible.
